Canva is probably one of the best free tools out on the web at the moment. From being able to design practically any marketing posts to creating book covers and calendars, it really is a game-changer. However, the app of the month for me is Canva’s brilliant new mobile app: Canva Stories.

With Insta Stories becoming more and more important for businesses to use, it can be difficult to make engaging content with just Instagram alone. With the fear of looking basic and no longer exciting to current or potential followers, Canva has answered my prayers and created a specific app just for Instagram Stories and better yet, you can add small animations to them as well!

Styles and when to use them

Canva is notorious for having almost any (and every) template style you can think of. No matter which industry you’re in, there’s a template for it and that’s the beauty of Canva (and the reason this app is one of my favs!) Being able to use Canva’s story templates, without having to go through the fiddly app, saves so much time and also allows you to post them straight to your Instagram profile!

Not every template will work for your business though, so while there are some really cool templates that you may want to use you need to be strict with yourself and decide which works best for your business. For example…

Edgy brands or businesses would go for templates like this…

Those more natural would go for templates like this…

Or travel businesses/bloggers/brands (The triple B’s) would benefit from templates like this…

Getting the wrong style of a template for your Business/Brand/Blogger can make it seem like you are trying too hard (when Instagram Stories is meant to look effortlessly engaging.) The thing to remember is that if you put the Instagram stories next to your brand style guide (other artwork like posters, Facebook ads ect) it should look like they are from the family-style – Not some random pieces of content that have been suddenly made!

(And from what I’ve experienced, they seem to update their templates every few months or around specific holidays (such as Valentines Day, Christmas ect.) so there’s always fresh content!)

Promotions through stories

As Instagram stories are becoming a lot more popular, it was quite predictable that you would be able to create Instagram Story ads sooner rather than later. Being able to promote something without cluttering your grid (that will reach your followers in real-time and not through a pretty crap algorithm) is probably one of the best things to come from Instagram!

You can promote a flash sale, a limited edition product, run competitions and even tease new things that are coming to your business or brand! Creating engaging stories can also be used for paid ads – even though these can come at a premium because of its a higher value placement (This is from Clem our ad queen!)

If you’re promoting an offer or a sale you’ll want to use templates like this…

If you’re wanting to promote a competition or a new service, these templates will be more suited to text-heavy posts…

Takeaways
Canva Stories App is one of the best free story design apps out there if you are wanting to create engaging content for stories. But just because the templates are cool, doesn’t mean you should use them. Think of what your brand style is and implement it through the templates by changing the text, font, colours and imagery to suit your style.
